Together: Canby Center News March 2025

The Canby Center

Together At The Center

Ten years ago, a single mom moved to Canby for work. “I was starting over with a new job and new to town and had absolutely nothing,” she recalls. “The Canby Center helped me. You shared clothing with my son and me, helping build my confidence and hope for this fresh start. Thank you!”

We need hope and it can start with a simple act of sharing. And today, it’s my pleasure to highlight that key stories and data are now available in The Canby Center’s 2024 Annual Report.

Sharing hope took many forms; some of our favorites include:

  • No-cost food and clothing shared with the community every week.

  • Backpacks and school supplies shared with 423 students.

  • Opportunities for adults to develop personal finance and English conversation skills.

  • Deep investment in the lives of 14 middle school mentees.

  • A love of learning shared with 160 students through reading and subject tutoring.

In the nine years I’ve served as TCC’s executive director, I’ve witnessed how every act of sharing connects us. And in connection - to personal, dignifying, practical help - hope abounds. With great hope,As

Rooted in God’s love, this role ensures TCC’s resource needs are met by cultivating and stewarding relationships with transparency and care. This person will lead a dedicated team in planning, executing, and evaluating all fundraising efforts.

A Hand Up, Not A Handout

At The Canby Center, food is a priority. Families in our membership program have access to a storehouse of weekly food - enough to help a working-poor family to make ends meet. In addition, we host a Community Share at the entrance of our building - open 24/7 for anyone in the community, not just members.

Community Share is located at the entrance of our building next to the Canby High School, behind McDonald’s at 681 SW 2nd Ave. Canby OR 97013.

📢 You can help fill Community Share!

🍎 Found a great buy-one-get-one-free deal? Keep one, place one in Community Share.

🥦 Preparing to travel? Transfer perishables from your pantry and refrigerator to ours!

🍞 Hosting a party? Invite guests to bring a loaf of bread, bag of rice, or fruit for Community Share.

Every baked good, carton of eggs, and can of soup makes a difference.

Help us meet the growing need for eggs, milk, and produce; make a special gift today with the designation “Food Assistance.”

In Step With Staff

This month, we celebrate a remarkable milestone—five years of service from Christina Ramirez! Hired in March 2020 to lead the expansion of our Thriving Together program, Christina stepped into her role just as the world was about to change in ways no one could have imagined. From day one, Christina’s leadership, compassion, and innovative problem-solving helped families navigate an incredibly difficult season.

"What stands out from our Covid response is how rapidly our community stepped up to support our efforts during the pandemic," Christina reflects. "Those Saturday mornings, giving out food boxes in pouring rain, were some of my favorites! Volunteers still showed up, ready to serve with a smile."

Since her promotion to Assistant Program Director in 2022, Christina has continued to elevate the Thriving Together program, improving the ways member families achieve long-term goals by addressing immediate needs like food, clothing, skills training, and financial education. "I'm really proud of the improvements we've made. We’re prioritizing relationship, building trust, and focused on more efficiency to serve new member families right away."

In 2024 alone, Christina’s team onboarded 187 new families into the Thriving Together program.

Beyond her professional achievements, Christina’s vivacious spirit and can-do attitude mean she is a joy to work with. She brings encouragement, energy, and dedication to her team every day.

"I’ve learned to embrace change — it’s a beautiful thing," Christina says. "Every challenge brings growth; what a blessing it is to be part of that transformation."

Thank you, Christina, for your incredible contribution to The Canby Center and the families we serve!

In Step With Service

What a joy it was to celebrate our dedicated volunteers at our recent Volunteer Appreciation Bingo events! From van drivers to tutors, food distribution organizers to kitchen teams, every volunteer plays a vital role in our mission.

In the past 12 months alone, volunteers have contributed an astounding 13,180 hours of service! Of the 594 volunteers currently serving, well over half are program members who give back each month.

These events give our staff and board the chance to say THANK YOU! And the joy is mutual—one volunteer shared, "Bingo was so FUN, and I just want to tell you how much I appreciate being included in the Center. It is very soothing, so thank you for letting me be a part of it."

Volunteers also help make special moments possible, like our recent Relationship Strengthening class, where families decorated Valentine cookies together. This free, community event welcomed 50 attendees, filling our space with laughter, creativity, and connection.

Special events—along with daily operations—are only possible because of volunteers like you. Whether you’d like to sign up for a one-time shift or find an ongoing role that fits your schedule, we’d love to help! Visit our website or call us at 503-266-2920 to get started.

No matter how often or how long you’ve volunteered, we are deeply grateful for the time, talent, and love you share. Thank you!
