Together: Canby Center News April 2024

Updated: Dec 11, 2024

At The Center

Easter celebrate Jesus Christ's death and resurrection and reminds us of the founding purpose of The Canby Center. Five local churches, inspired by the passion and compassion of Christ, started the center sixteen years ago.

In the person of Jesus, we come to know a man who fed hungry people, healed the sick, and returned sight to the blind.  He is at the same time the way to God’s love and the living embodiment of God’s love.

He lifted human dignity higher and elevated community more than anyone else I’ve known. Grace marked Jesus’s nature. And yet He was not soft on personal responsibility nor mild on divine justice.

The Canby Center’s values flow from Him:

  • Strengthening Human Dignity

  • Caring Relationships

  • Faith through Life's Storms

  • Personal Responsibility

Following the Master,

Together We Serve

In the last 12 months, 13,050 volunteer hours were shared with The Canby Center.  From 684 unique individuals, that is a record amount of service! One stand-out volunteer is Maribel Lomeli. She helps with guest services and enthusiastically jumped in to to help facilitate our recent Family Game Night.  Her bilingual support is making a difference for youth and families!

In Step With Staff

It’s “Manic Monday” and our guest services coordinator Mimi, has answered eighteen calls in the first 30 minutes while checking guests in and addressing their needs. She is a trooper. With a compassionate and warm smile, she greets people by name. “Good morning John… Lupita… Rosa…Sarah… Pat… Oscar!”

Unloading tons of food, processing book donations for children, and finalizing the purchasing needed for the week is just a normal Monday. After the intensity of the lunch rush our big room is cleaned for afterschool tutoring. The Canby Center’s staff share a sense of mission. Fueled by God’s love, we are happiest when we are sharing God’s love with others even on Manic Mondays! Learn about our Programs

Building For Tomorrow

Board Members like Dan Drazan and Laurie Field (pictured above) have energized our building expansion project. We are currently in the final stages of interacting with Clackamas County for the building permits we need to start the work. No major hurdles so far, but everything seems to take longer than anticipated. Please pray for SGA Architecture, General Contractor Triplett-Wellman, Clackamas County building department, our Board of Directors and Director of Expansion Mark Smith. Please pray for wisdom, favor, and God’s story to unfold in Canby!
